Scams targeting lottery players in Singapore

Scammers target lottery victims via WhatsApp and other social media platforms, claiming to be religious figures or affiliated with certain religious groups. They often promise big financial windfalls or request money transfers from their victims.

Police in Singapore say at least 55 people have fallen victim to such a scam and lost over SG$376,896. The police said they recommend the use of ScamShield and to be wary of any offers that promise big financial windfalls or ask for money transfers from their victims.

The easing of Covid-19 restrictions saw punters coming out in force, resulting in a dramatic surge in bets on 4-D, Toto and sports such as football. Total bets on lottery and sports in the last financial year ended March 2022 climbed to SGD9.2 billion, a record for Singapore’s statutory body.
